Our next stop on our tour of Front Royal was to Los Portillos, a Mexican restaurant that serves up some of the most authentic and tasty Mexican food I have ever had. We have been to a lot of Mexican restaurants during this Foodies journey, so we are always intrigued when we get to a spot that has dishes we have not had at other restaurants. Luckily, Los Portillos had quite an extensive menu, plus some unique items exclusive to their establishment.

Los Portillos has standard pricing for Mexican restaurants. Many of these menus are huge, so the amount you spend varies based on what you are in the mood for and how big your party is. You can easily get a meal for under $20 that will satiate you for the rest of the day.

I really liked the ambience here. It wasn’t over the top with Mexican decor like a lot of places, but it was still themed nicely. They have a very impressive bar, and something about this place exudes high-class. They have a nice outdoor patio area as well, plus two large dining rooms. All in all, this feels like a traditional Mexican restaurant, but upscaled a little more than the average.

Let’s get to the most important ranking – the food. Here is what we were able to sample:
Carnitas Tacos – these were cooked perfectly, and had that classic street taco flavor with the onion and cilantro. Both the salsa verde and the spicy red sauce were perfect garnishes.
Texas Fries – we got to sample Los Portillo’s Texas Fries as well, and these were loaded with well-seasoned chicken, steak, chorizo, and shrimp, and they were smothered in pico, sour cream, and queso. So decadent and such a great dish to share.
Carnitas – this might have been the juiciest pork I have ever had. I absolutely loved this dish, and I loved the pickled jalapenos. Take a bite off the end and squeeze that juice on the pork to give it a little kick.
Enchiladas Verdes – three stuffed enchiladas filled with shred beef and topped with a tangy tomatillo sauce – what could be better?

Los Portillos was such a great experience. I loved some of the unique dishes, and everything we tried was fresh and authentic. It was all cooked the proper way, with plenty of seasoning and the meat was so tender and juicy. The staff was awesome, and I loved the more up-scale ambience of this spot. I can’t wait to go back someday!
